About the club

Newbury Chess Club brings local players together for over-the-board chess and friendly conversation.

We welcome players of all ages and abilities, whether you play regularly, are returning after a break or are completely new to the game.

Our social evenings are a relaxed opportunity to enjoy a game, meet other players and improve your chess. Our more experienced and higher-rated members are always happy to share their knowledge and help others learn.

League chess

We play in the Berkhire Chess League in Division 3. Games take place at Woolton Hill Church Hall. If you’re interested in playing for the club, contact Sam to find out more.

Part of Newbury’s chess history

The club appears in the British Chess Federation Yearbook for 1954–55, which lists its meeting place as the “Marigold” Café on Market Street. It’s a lovely glimpse of chess in Newbury more than seventy years ago.

Over the years, the club has also met at the United Reformed Church Hall, Mary Hare Grammar School and the Woolton Church Hall. Today, social evenings at The Swan Inn continue that long local tradition.
