Welcome to Newbury Chess Club

thinking hard

Interested in playing chess, either seriously or socially? Newbury Chess Club meets most Thursday evenings from 7.30pm until 10.00 pm.

Our match playing season is now over and we are on our summer break. We shall probably re-open on Thursday 7th September.

Division 2 cup

We have two teams in the Berkshire League. The A-team are in Division 1 and came 2nd from bottom, so are in danger of being relegated (this will be determined at the Berkshire Chess Association AGM). In contrast, our B-team in Division 3 won the league championship so are due for promotion to Division 2.

We welcome players of all abilities and ages. We are involved in three main activities:

  • Team Matches - As noted above we now play two teams (of 6 players) in the Berkshire Chess League.
  • The Club Championship - Now in its sixth year, this is a tournament that carries on through the whole season where each player plays every other one. Results are submitted to the English Chess Federation for grading.
  • Social Chess - This is what members play most club nights when we are not playing timed matches (above two categories). We are a friendly informal bunch and cater for all abilities and ages - from juniors to retirees. Juniors must be accompanied by parents.

If you are interested in joining us, simply come along (though best avoid match nights for your first visit). To find out more read the information page.
